Suzuki made it real easy to check the oil by putting a sight glass on the crankcase. Once you run an engine low and scuff the guts, it will eat oil, and continue to eat oil. You probably damaged the engine early in it's life and the long service intervals caught up with you. On the next bike, check the oil level every week, and change the oil every 1500 miles.

The tranny and ball bearings may have survived, but the piston, rings, cylinder, cam, and valve guides are probably toast. Price a rebuild compared to a low mileage engine from a wreck.
